1939-1945 WORLD WAR II
Canada Offers Safe Harbor to the Dutch Royal Family during the war. Then Princess Juliana gave birth to a daughter. That day the Canadian Parliament declared the hospital wing where the child was born to be Dutch territory so that one day she would be able to inherit her country's throne.
1945 PEACE RETURNS TO EUROPE
The Royal Family Returns Home. As an expression of her country's gratitude and friendship, each year forward Queen Juliana sends thousands of colorful tulip bulbs to Ottawa.
1991 OTTAWA RECOGNIZES THE USA
In the same spirit of the Dutch Royals, Ottawa’s Canadian Tulip Festival presented the Washington, DC, United States with a tulip garden in recognition of the lasting friendship between the two countries, and the sharing of the longest undefended border in the world.
1991 THE INTERNATIONAL PEACE GARDEN FOUNDATION IS CREATED
IPGF President, Paula Savage, a team of tireless volunteers, community supporters and a strong board has succeeded in building this dream over the past three decades
More Peace gardens are planned. The latest is the Vallarta Botanical Garden in Mexico, opening in February 2017. Future International Peace Gardens are being considered for Chile and South Korea over the next two years.
